I've just noticed one of the chips inside the Sound Expander is a Yamaha 3014B, exactly as documented at ftp://ftp.yamahayst.com/pub/Fax_Back_Doc/Sound/YM3014B.PDF Now it's only a D/A converter, but it's a start at least.
