You did not loose track. The problem is that it works other than you
expect. :-)

I know of two different types how this can be accomplished:

1. Write your own formatting routine. An example of this can be found in
   the  book I once send you a copy: K. Schramm, "Die Floppy 1541".
   Unforuntately, no source is available.

2. Copy the format routine from ROM into RAM, patch it to your needs,
   and execute it there with jobcode $E0.
