Hmm, http://dict.leo.org says that "verkannten" is "to cant", and the free English dictionaries installed on my Debian GNU/Linux system seem to suggest that it might be the correct translation. Sometimes, there are no word-for-word translations. Even when there are, in international audience it is better to explain using more common words. (I didn't know either word "verkannten" or "to cant", but I guessed it right via "Kante" from the German word.
