And no software gives an error message that says "broken", just as it does not give an error message that says "tilted" or "twisted", not in English anyway. "Not recognized" is however a common error message for a floppy that cannot be read. > > He also mentioned leo, but it does not seem to have computer specific > > terms. > > Leo knows "verkanten", and it says something different than your native German > speaker. Leo does not give the meaning "recognize" for "kennen", but my paper dictionary does. So, in this case, Leo has missed a meaning. "Verkanten" as described by Leo is a technical term for the mechanical properties of an object. A piece of software could not determine the mechanical properties of an object. This word could not be used to describe the signal being detected by a floppy drive, unless this is a colloquial expression. If this is the case, Leo's definition doesn't apply anyway. The problem with dictionaries is that they do not give the enough information about the ussage of words, especially technical computer terms. Message was sent through the cbm-hackers mailing list
