Use the same modification used to apply a PC drive to an amiga. The 1581 board expects an amiga-style floppy drive.
I used a pc-style drive by swapping one line (the 'disk ready' line you mention) as well as shorting a second line that indicates that the floppy mechanism has spun up and is ready to go.
