I do not see the need for all the ground plane on this board. It is
not an RF circuit in need of shielding, is it?

I do not need to get the etched board myself, I still have 5 or 6 of
the proto-typing boards with the EXP port card edge connections these
have a slim buss all the way around the outside (top and bottom) that
could be connected to the 4 grounds of the port (or one side could be
ground the other VCC buss). My problem with the proto-types is that
I would have to wire-wrap to achieve the red layer connections. but
with sockets on the top side the wires could work on the top-side.

The card edge fingers are longer on these proto boards too.
