First regarding the name, X-IDE. The way you made the design makes it more suitable for other 6502 machines and of course the C64/128. I can imagine you selling the board to other non-Commodore users and then X-IDE will appeal more to them then 1541IDE. Objections?

As said before, Nicolas Welte's 6502 board will give you extra RAM and FlashRAM. It also isn't that difficult to add 24 KB of SRAM using a 32 KB IC: http://www.baltissen.org/newhtm/ram15412.htm
I prefer to have a complete Kernal in ROM in the first place as the product will (hopefully) find a way to people not as skilled as we are. But nevertheless this is a very good idea to deal with certain tools like Validate and the equivalents of XCOPY and DELTREE; not incorperating them into ROM saves space for the real basic functions like handling directories.

You created a SCSI interface for the C64. But AFAIK you nowhere mention a file system so one able to use it. If you have one, can we make use of it for out purposes?

I can imagine that you are more interested in a file system handling xx GB drives then one handling images only. But I learned a lot of it! So I shift my attention to the first one again.
Any volunteers for the 8250 hack? As said before, I only have a listing of the 8050 (PDF, 5 MB) but IMHO that shouldn't be a big problem.
