I think this is critical to achieving your goal, since it will significantly improve your ability to read from copy-protected disks. The 1541U, for example, already supports optionally enabling extra ram in its 1541 emulation. I'm not sure why since you can't really use it for track at a time reads, but there it is. There is at least one person selling new ram expansion kits for the 1541 on eBay on a regular basis for $19, so they are not exotic or hard to find.
