I still think comp.lang.vhdl is a good resource. There are some very 
knowledgeable people who are always eager to answer questions you may have. 
I wouldn't consider it "dead". There's also comp.arch.fpga.

Read up on the theory, then get yourself a good "real world" book and play, 
play & more play. I would strongly recommend you make yourself familiar with 
a simulator, like ModelSim, before you invest too much time in silicon.

P.S. too bad the Godil has a Xilinx part.. :(
