Philosophically, I think its worth the extra time to take a look at it.

I realize this shares very little with uIEC, but I was in a similat 
position in 2007 or so.  I had gotten quite far in implementing uIEC/DOS 
from scratch when I became aware of sd2iec.  Initially, I continued on 
with uIEC/DOS, ignoring sd2iec because I didn't understand the code.  
Still, I finally realized the community would be better served if I 
helped add value to sd2iec than if I continued to go it alone.

Maybe your situation is different, but I think all of these niche 
projects need to consider this aspect.  Far too many projects die 
because there is only 1 developer/author, and no one to help.  With 
sd2iec, at least there are a handful of folks who understand the code 
and can provide good comments on ideas.  It's also more fun to work with 
others in developing code.
