I would suspect either a 6522 VIA or 6526 CIA. I saw the 1571 has two 6522 
and one 6526, not sure about the 1570 but I suppose something similar? I 
didn't quite figure out which one handles the IEC communcation with the 
computer, but I think it is the 6526?

Can you read the error channel? Which computer are you using, e.g. a C64 or 
C128? I suppose as you get DEVICE NOT PRESENT, it won't even work to read 
the error channel.
