Why not use the old method of some fastloaders that disabled the screen but then changed the border color between 2 colors every few Bytes read which gave a rather dynamic pattern on the screen. Then change the 2 colors for the next step. As long as anything's going on, there will be activity on the screen. And from the colors you know what step you're in.
