You probably have the newer "narrow" board, don't you? If yes, try the good, old one, maybe only with the S-video amp in place of the RF modulator (the first modulators were causing heavy blur). I also very much dislike the output of the newer VIC mounted on the narrow boards. It's "grainy", "harsh" and generally unpleasant to me. Especially the "spikes" visible with raster effects. True, you can alleviate it a bit by blurring the display ;-) but that shouldn't be the way to go IMHO ;-)
