Hi, Giovi Thanks a lot for this - I will grab both PetTester dumps tonight and will try it as soon as I'll have few more details on PetVet operation - I've currently understood 'everything' about the "convertrom.php" stuff but I still require details on PetVet's flash procedure [is it mandatory to unplug it from Pet's socket or not ?] ... Also, I would like to clarify jumpers and pads usages, as much as memory mapping détails. And without MikeS, Dave_m and the other good friends at vintage-computer.com forum (VCF), my Pet was still a nice and useless box today. If I'm right, somebody (on VCF?) told me there's no risk to leave the computer without the filter. I'm planning to remove all of them from every CBM device I have; one explosion was enough for me, I'm 45 and that's an age suitable for heart attacks, so I want to minimize the risk ;-) I think Gubbish answered me in just few weeks because MikeS "The Great" gave him a phone call. Mike Gubbish got married those days, so we all should understand he had some hard days ;-) Sorry for the bad link on my site, nobody told me it (maybe because you're the first one that read my page, LOL). However I fixed it: http://www.verrua.org/pet_repair/petester_8032.zip that's the CRTC version for 40 cols (it works for 80 cols too, I checked it on my 8032: but it only uses the upper half of the screen). It's suitable for 4032, 8032 (and should work for 8096 and 8296....?). The "not CRTC" version is here: http://www.verrua.org/pet_repair/petester.bin -> I checked it on my 3032, it works fine. I suppose it should work for the entire line 2001. This should be the same you download from the other site and it's not suitable for your need, since 8096 uses CRTC. Take petester_8032.zip instead. cheers, Giovi ----- Original Message ----- From: hwarin@neuf.fr To: cbm-hackers@musoftware.de Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2013 8:20 PM Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: PetDisk (was Re: Re: 1541 to 2031 adapter (was no subject)) Giovi, Went to your site and found quite a lot of interesting return of experience in PET repair "for the dimmies in electronics" (as I am). I hope that it won't take me 12 years to have it fixed (as other boxes are waiting) but it's on it's way as it stayed about one year and half before I found time to re-open the box.... [for fireworks specialists, the more suitable component I've found to replace the original one was http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/18347.pdf ... I don't like the idea to replace "something" by "nothing"] About my experience with bitfixer's sales department, I don't think that anyone had a direct phone call, I was just patient (euh 6 months ?), put 2 (identical) orders, and it finally arrived. I've not been able to find "PetTester" from your site but found another incarnation there : http://www.8bit-homecomputermuseum.at/repair/bluepet/bluepet.html Is this the same ? I received it probably just because MikeS was so kind to call and to tell him that an annoying italian/brazilian (me) was waiting for the petdisk and he was boring the whole VCF for that ;-) I have no experience about petvet (well, I have no experience about electronics!) but you should be able to program its ROM with the CRTC version of the pettester (see VCF or get it here: http://www.verrua.org/pet_repair/petester_8032.zip ). It must to be put at the kernel address (you can also use a 2732 eprom in the kernel socket). It's a dirty diagnostic, but at least should help you a little. --Giovi ----- Original Message ----- From: hwarin@neuf.fr To: cbm-hackers@musoftware.de Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2013 2:13 PM Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: PetDisk (was Re: Re: 1541 to 2031 adapter (was no subject)) I've finally received my PetDisk & PetVet last week .... Many thanks to Mike if he reads this ! What to say ... This are very nice "artisanal" products, I still did not tested PetDisk yet (bought soldered, sorry Giovi, I bought it soldered & tested mostly because it was not so much more expansive and this Safed me a lot of work). I've tested PetVet yesterday and it resurected immediately my 8096 (*). Now, I have to diagnose more deeply to fugure out what's going wrong (RAM or ROM). Another comment would be to say that PetVet documentation and firmware are y very minimal (a more sophisticated "monitor" would have been a great idea, also, even "screen dump" functions only on left part of the screen, as if it was a 40Cols screen !). (*) Initial failure on this 8096 is unknown - readable characters on screen, beep, but basic won't come up. I've stopped working on this piece of hardware since 1 year or so, when power line filter smoked and exploded ! Anyway, I agree that schematics & PCB scans could be very instructive (but at Mike prices, I don't think that it's interesting to try to duplicate it, since he still provides new units). This way we have an easy way to make the petdisk at home (since the firmware is freely released).... cheers, Giovi ----- Original Message ----- From: hwarin@neuf.fr To: cbm-hackers@musoftware.de Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2013 10:16 PM Subject: Re: Re: Re: PetDisk (was Re: Re: 1541 to 2031 adapter (was no subject)) Hi, I finally had a mail requesting a payment on Paypal in the start of october. I'm trying to order one since a big while now without success ... the only answer that I had once was that he had trouble to get some parts ... Is it possible that the "patched" rom is for a different rom pair? I can't see any reference to which is the correct part# for the ROM that doesn't require changing. Did you use the ROM from the MASHUP site or did you run the patch routine on your existing ROM? Steve From: Giovi To: cbm-hackers@musoftware.de Sent: Thursday, September 19, 2013 3:42:38 PM Subject: Hi folks! my name is Giovi (Giovanni Verrua), italian, C= collector, I live in Brazil and I'm new to this list. As Ruud Baltissen (that should receive this post, if I'm right...hi Ruud!) already discovered, I'm not an hardware expert; dummy should be most the correct word :) so I apologize if my further posts will be silly in some way. I also apologize if I will do some mistakes posting to this mailing list. Don't be shy, correct me whenever is needed! My first question to this list is about the 1541 drive modified for the IEEE-488 interface (in other words, about connecting a 1541 to a PET), this one: http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/documents/projects/ieee-488/index.html also described at this page: http://vintagemashups.net/2010/12/commodore-1541-ieee-488-conversion/,where I downloaded the patched ROM. I'm writing this post because, of course, mine doesn't work :) - I checked it twice and I haven't found (yet) the mistake. I will check it again. No answer from the 1541 and no reset when the 8032-sk is switched on or off. I'm sure that: - the 1541 drive is ok - the 6522 is ok - the socket adapter is ok - the EPROM im programmed returns no difference if compared with the patched rom image (so I believe it's ok too) - the ieee cable an connectors are ok - the ieee-488 port of the 8032 is ok since it works fine with the Petdisk (from bitfixer.com). >>> The question for you: >>> I have a little doubt about the patched ROM: >>> it's showing a different behavior respect the original 901229-05 ROM. - with the original ROM, as usual, the floppy starts to spin and the red light comes on; after few seconds, the light and the spin motor go off in the same moment. Normal behavior for this kind of drive. - with the patched ROM (with or without the ieee interface) the floppy just spins for a while and then stops, while the red light stays on for a longer time (and then goes off). Anybody of you C=hackers made this adapter in the past, and can tell me at least if the patched ROM shows this different behavior? cheers, Giovi Message was sent through the cbm-hackers mailing list Message was sent through the cbm-hackers mailing list Message was sent through the cbm-hackers mailing listReceived on 2013-11-15 14:00:05
