I once saw a modem interface that used the user port. It used the shift register. There were a few diodes on the user port connector and it connected directly to the modem. It has IEEE488, serial, and parallel ports and can communicate between any of them. I have used it to connect my PET to my PC. It's capabilities are limited. Although I can receive data from the PET using a terminal program, sending back to the PET failed, probably for lack of a good terminal program on the PET. > ps.
