I suppose they had to pay close attention since the C64 was to be able to emulate the MAX. Such backwards compatibility imposes many restrictions on the design. The same way as Bil had to make C128 backwards compatible with the C64. Whereas whoever designed the P500, did not care about any compatibility whatsoever so the machine is much different than C64.
