People monitor what chips are being bought on ebay and create fakes of 
those.

It doesn't require too much demand for the prices to go up. I was in a 
pawn shop when the PlayStation VR launched and I overheard a call the 
owner was making about how the price of PlayStation Move controllers had 
shot up. If you're trying to make money then you have to make it your 
business to know this stuff.
