Ah, yes.  I did do that too - wrote a device handler that fit in the
cassette buffer and tapped it into the vector list so "device 4" was
my Centronics printer (literally Centronics brand, not just a
Centronics interface).  Totally transparent.

It was so compatible, it worked for SCRIPT on Infocom games.
