When using Ubuntu, I suggest the 'Xubuntu' Derivate, it uses XFCE as window manager. And use 'xterm', not one of them more modern terminal emulators. Why? It works... with the other emulators I sooner or later run into a problem and xterm allows lots of configuration options using the .Xresources or .Xdefaults file.
