Switching the CRTC to a mode without spaces should be as simple as
switching to upper case + graphics mode. (Atleast that's what the
Kernal on my 8296 does). PRINT CHR$(142) should do that unless the
wikipedia article on petscii is wrong.

(On my PET I use a modified keyboard from some terminal, so I have the
extra key that's needed for being able to change mode both ways in
direct mode, so I seldom use this petscii code thing that you have to
use in atleast one directon on a standard pet).
