I think so too. At least, I do remember writing a program in high school
that used a 1570 drive to format disks readable by MS-DOS.

It might be indeed instructive to see what FDREAD actually does, it may
be something similar to what we are trying to achieve. I will grab a
copy and run a DEBUG session with it.
