IIRC: Yes, for example in the (1541 oriented) book "Inside Commodore DOS". IIRC there is a difference in timing from having read one sector to writing the next sector. If you format and rewrite a whole track the disk is still readable in both drives, but then you have a disk that cannot easily be written in either drive.
