Oh, well - as I use to say - we can afford doing it right today because we don't do it for a living. Ask those who had to design the machines back then whether they could do all things as they wanted/ things should be done or whether they more often had to hack things together just to push it out. Bill f.e. has quite a few insightful stories about that ;-) Therefore, while I fully agree with you, the realities were (and often are) different and the question is now only whether the original C64 has the same problem.
