For the simple reason that I had no idea what it did at that time. This guy (sorry, forgot his name in time) said he would build a PCB with the design and find out why/how GATE was needed. 

I know there have been discussion on this regarding this gate later but having no 7501/8501 equipped computers anymore, I didn't put much attention to it.
