It was cheaper if you bought it with MS-DOS than CP/M (Digital Research 
wanted to preserve their image as a premium product).

Apple 2 & PET's weren't much cheaper either.

I only used an actual IBM machine once, I think it was an AT. It was dog 
slow.

My first job upgraded from apple 2 to some pc clone that I don't 
remember the name of, my second job were an olivetti reseller.

There were M28, M240 & M380. Although I got stuck with an Amstrad PC1512 
(that had been upgraded to 640k), but it was still pretty good for an XT 
class machine.
