The MMU is not visible in C64 mode, thus you can't change the direction even if you force the "c128 mode". Back in the day I studied the C128 routines to get the burst mode to work with PuZip and GunZip. The burst byte has to be sent at the right moment to get the burst byte response and thus detect that the device is burst-capable.
