I've not heard that said about philips, but I've heard it said about sony.

It's very likely not the main reason. My parents bought VHS, my mum 
certainly didn't care that you could get porn for it.

They bought it from the local electrical store that rented out VHS and 
betamax tapes, but VHS recorders were cheaper and very shortly you could 
only get VHS rentals. I assume because everyone made the majority made 
the same choice and bought the cheaper VHS.

Video 2000 came when VHS had already won, I don't remember ever seeing 
any pre-recorded tapes.
