I also don't remember if it was with OLD or NEW ROMs. The thing was that if you would LOAD something from tape, and while it was scanning the tape to see if there was something to load, you would press the < key (less than), then it would start printing < characters to the screen if it was detecting something "interesting" on the tape. Which was a nice way to detect if you had an empty spot on the tape or not. But how it works... I have no idea.
