I don't know anything about this particular inteface, but in general some NIC chips can be equipped with different transceiver hardware. For example the PCI NIC DECchip Tulip (dc2114x) can have a bunch of different transcievers, with some more expensive external hardware for 100Mbps (used in higher end PCI NIC cards for servers) and a cheaper solution for 10Mbps (used in Compaq consumer PCs).
