There are pin types made for this purpose that do not damage sockets. From
my research it seems that the pin diameter is about 0.018" (0.46mm) to
0.020" (0.5mm) in the headers made for this purpose. These are not
inexpensive parts to buy a few at a time though.

I do not like the spring-loaded hooks. They are OK when used for testing
purposes but make for a lousy long term solution, IMHO.
