If you're not planning to use VIC at all, you could replace it with a pin
compatible module generating the  required signals that you cannot provide
through the expansion port, i.e. RAS and CAS. This would give your GPU the
access to full bandwidth of C64 RAM - otherwise it's difficult to make VIC
shut up during low PHI2 phase, and that wastes around 50%.
