You should be getting a syntax error. You need to put a colon after the sleep command. Also, you can press enter after the sleep command and then type another command. The keyboard buffer will hold it until the computer "awakes". The real question is not why it doesn't work, but why it sometimes works when you should be getting a syntax error.
