It depends what is in the C64 cartridge.

For example, if the contents of the C64 cartridge is just ROM, static RAM
or ROM+ static RAM then using VICE with a dedicated interface port should
work fine in my opinion - albeit the speed will be dictated by the hist
computer upon which VICE is running. In my experience, this may be faster
than a real C64 (under defined conditions of course).

If the cartridge contains bespoke hardware that is timing critical, then I
agree that this solution will be destined to fail. But it would be
interesting to find out how many cartridges this would (in fact) preclude...

One question does remain however, if the cartridge ROM is available - and
could be read for use with VICE, and the plan is to use VICE fir the
emulation and user interface, I can’t actually see what benefit you would
get from the proposed solution.

Just trying to think through the use case.
