I agree that it's particularly annoying, I've used the VDC from c64 mode and the code complexity balloon as soon as you take the code you wrote based on the manual, to what is necessary to run on each VDC. It's not the only bit of hardware I've ever had to hand hold to get to work though. The NTSC vic2 with different speed, the SID with different filter responses, the CIA with different timing are all annoyances & at least the VDC workround is obvious while these can require a lot of head scratching. I know, I'm not talking about blame. Regret doesn't make a design better. VIC2 and SID are exciting chips, the sprites & cool sounds make you love them. Love can make you blind.
