Well, you can determine by software whether you have a 656x or a 856x 
VIC (*). That helps sorting out the older systems where it's not visible 
no matter what.

Then just assume that it is always visible on the 856x. ;)

(*) I think only the 8500/6510 pair cannot be told apart via software.
