I have an Alphacom VP42 printer and to my surprise, it does indeed contain a
"VIC-42" chip:

My first thought upon seeing this was that it could be a MOS 6500/1 like in
the Commodore 1520 plotter. I did some quick continuity checks and that seems
probable. Vcc, Vss, and the crystal match the pins on the 6500/1 datasheet.

As David Wood noted, there are different versions of this Alphacom printer.
This one is badged "VP42". There is another one on eBay USA right now (item
154500859889) that is badged only "42". It is externally very similar but the
board is different and has an 8041 instead.

Regards,
Mike
