(I call them this way now here, I am not sure if this is an official term) That is, you write to blocks on the disk "by hand" and manage the BAM "by hand". You can do this, and you do not need any directory entry for them. However, it is also your fault if someone uses "initialize" on this disk, and everything is freed up again.
