AFAIK, the board should upgrade by inserting a new CPLD. I'm sincerely hoping Jeri will try to include a 65816 option socket. It could function as either a replacement processor (like the C-128's Z-80) or a coprocessor. As a COPper, the 65816 might handle the main system operations and allow the emulated 6510 to deal directly with video.
