Both, the 6x0 and 7x0 models have a cassette port, but the kernal does not contain the routines to drive it. My copy of the service manual (in german) says: "Die jetzt gueltigen Betriebssystem-Versionen beinhalten nicht mehr die Datasette-Betriebssoftware. Sie wurde zu Gunsten des Maschinensprache-Monitors entfernt und soll als ROM-Modul verfuegbar gemacht werden." (rough translation: The current operating system versions do no longer contain the software needed to access the datasette. It has been removed in favour of the machine language monitor and will eventually be made available as a ROM cartridge.) I don't know exactly with which version the datasette routines have been removed for the CBM 600/700 models, but for the P500 this happened with version -02. Since the kernals are quite similar, I would assume that this is also true for the CBM 600/700 machines.
