The 7805 has over-voltage, over-current, and overheating protection. If it has too much voltage on it, or too much current is going through it, or it gets too hot, it will shut off. It looks as though it has been blown, but it hasn't. You have to wait till it gets cold before it resets. That could take a couple hours, or it colud take a day.
