I don't think that it is possible to write a compiler that generates decent
code and that runs on a 6502 machine, especially if it is written in a high
level language. The old cc65 compiler had a version that was running on the
Atari, but lots of unportable 6502 asm code was needed to achieve this, and
some features were not available in this version.

So I would say you have to choose between a good compiler and one running on a
6502 machine.
