In the case of the Interactive Fiction community, there are, for
example, many versions of Infocom Adventure games, but posting any
of them for open and mass distribution is likely to cause wrath
and laywers to descend upon the unwary. To avoid problems, folks
have been posting diffs (patches) and a merge utility so you can
start with one version of the game and patch it to the other versions.

Disassemblers are great, but it's still risky to distribute a
simple disassembly of someone elses copyrighted code.
