What docs?
No limit. There is only the limit of nonblanked lines on the display.
With PAL VIC20 and a monitor which shows all of the overscan area the
maximum display size is 29x35 8x8-pixel characters, which still fits
to the 1024 bytes that VIC-I supports. You can do even more than 1024
video matrix with some tricks, but 29x35 is easy, not even 16x8-pixel
characters needed.
