One thing that may cause this is the fact that the motor of the datasette requires 6v, while I use 4.5v - 5v. Probably the motor doesn't reach the required speed. Still, mtap waits for a falling edge before storing pulses, so this is another pointer that the direction of the polarity flip is preserved.
