Ville Muikkula experimented with something like that over a year ago. If I remember correctly, he had interfaced a microcontroller to the drive, with enough memory to buffer a whole disk (or was it a track?) in GCR format. I guess you might be able to do it with the PC printer port using a kernel module. A user-space process cannot prevent context switches nor be driven by interrupts.
