On the Antarctic?  Wouldn't that be an iceline if you had one?

I too discontinued my landline almost 3 years ago.  Well, the very
same copper is now being used for ADSL, but the subscriber line was
actually disconnected from the telephone exchange and connected to
the DSLAM or whatever.

Hmm, given that local calls might still be free (flat rate) in the US,
could someone in the same area perhaps set up a Telnet gateway for
dialing up that BBS? :-)  Then we unauthentic CBM enthusiasts could
set up either an RS-232 to Telnet gateway for accessing the BBS from
a real C64, or worse, access it via a Commodore emulator.
