That it is really tape-related was also what I was thinking while
reading your description. After all tape loading uses different IRQ
vectors at different times. But tape reading is the part I least
understand of the PET ROMs... even writing is relatively straightforward
but still complex compared with all the rest. (And I don't have my own
annotated disassembly at hand right now). (I once wrote an article in
the PBE magazine about the topic but I don't think it went into any
readying detail either)
