Extra info:

The same grey-dots effect can be seen in some VIC-I chips / VIC20 
machines as well, but only for the border color pixels. If you lay out a 
video matrix on top, then changing the border+background register $900f 
does not cause problems.

Now, if I only could remember whether they were grey or light yellow 
pixels (VIC-I color 15).
