Is it the first version of C64? This did not have a heat sink on the voltage regulator, and would do strange things and then crash when the it got hot. The regulator is located on the right side near the joystick ports. Just add a heat sink. Also, the original external power supply used a transistor as a voltage regulator. When it got hot it would do similar things. I have replaced the transistor in mine with a standard 5 V regulator.
