Thomas Winkler (diddl on forums) has already implemented a fast transfer mode using the SRQ line that 1581s have. He calls it S3. The nibtools SRQ burst mode uses ATN for handshaking and thus only works with one drive on the bus. His version apparently works with multiple drives, although I haven't tested it yet.

The S3 code has not yet been integrated with xum1541 due to my limited time.
